THE FENG SHUI WAY
C O L O U R REMEDIES
Colours are have both psychological and Feng Shui significance. Feng Shui provides guidelines on how to use colours according to the five Feng Shui elements and yin and yang, and gives information about the symbolism and dynamics of colours in general. Feng Shui changes can be simply brought about by appropriately changing the decor to either stress or reduce one or the other of the easiest ways to shift the energy in your space with Feng Shui.
THE POWER OF COLOURS
is great; the possibilities are endless,
from tablecloths, curtains and rugs to
objects, pictures, paintings, images,
lampshades and plants. Each colour is
an expression of one of the five elements:
Fire, Water, Earth, Metal and Wood.
The elements are used in specific areas
according to the Feng Shui energy map
of your space or ‘Ba gua’.
RED in Feng Shui attracts attention and means power, fame, energy, authority and conquest. Red is the colour of life which keeps evil powers away; it is also used for protection. It also symbolises life, luck and joy- it is the colour of the bride; it is also the colour of youth. It brings support in your career, efforts and helps bring recognition. Red is activating and stimulating, improving assertiveness and dynamics. But it should be used as an accent colour only. The basic rule of Feng Shui is do not use too much of red colour as it can create aggressiveness and tension
ORANGE can also be used as it is often called the ‘social colour’- it creates the Feng Shui energy to promote lively conversation and good times in your home. Avoid predominant orange/red theme in the Feng Shui areas of West and Northwest as they are governed by metal element.
EARTH - symbolising nourishment and stability is the Feng Shui element of North-east and South-west. It is also the Feng Shui element of the centre of your home. Feng Shui Earth colours are: Yellow and earth colours (from ochre to bright yellow). Bring in the earth energy with the wall colour or may be the colour of upholstery or an art piece. A small quantity of red adds an interesting galvanising effect. Don’t use blue or black in these areas. Don’t mix too much white here for best results.
METAL ENERGY - brings in the energy of clarity, preciseness and focus. Metal colours are - White, grey and other metallic colours. Ba gua areas for metallic energy are - West and Northwest. Paint your wall with a coat of fresh white paint or go for predominantly white furniture. Yellow, representative of the producing element ‘Earth’ is also useful here.
WATER ENERGY is needed in the North. Water colours are: black and blue. Light blue coloured wall in the North can refresh and uplift your space and invite career opportunities in the space. Black colour is full of the energy of mystery and sophistication, power and protection; it is the colour of night, deep water and universal void. It adds to the depth, strength and definition to any space.
BLACK - Don’t overuse black as it can be depressing. But it is necessary in the Feng Shui combination. Avoid using black colour in the South. Use this colour in moderation in the West as it is the children’s creativity area. Don’t use fiery red here as water is inimical to fire. Moreover, usage of black colour should not be higher than the eye level- water element should not be given too much height. A touch of gold represents water producing element ‘metal’.
WOOD ELEMENT is required in the East and South-east areas of your space. Wood brings the energy of vibrant health and abundance.
JADE, GREEN through to azure are appropriate colours for this area. A light green wall colour can be an excellent choice for your home, office or business area or in your family room- especially in the East (health and family area) and South-east (wealth, abundance and prosperity area) and also, at times, in the South- fame and recognition area.
The black and dark blue of the water element are supportive and strengthening colours for the East and South-east direction. Don’t use too much fire (red) colour in the East and South-east as fire can burn wood- predominant element of East and South-east. But use it in moderation- like placing a red vase, or red painting or some other kinds of decor accessories.
The thing to really watch is to use a colour that will not drain the ‘element’ you wish to enhance. For example, a fire sector area will not respond well to being doused by blue, nor will a wood area flourish if you decorate it in metallic colours. A charge colour, i.e.., using a small quantity or flash of a contrasting colour which is added as a highlight, not mixed in with the main colour, often strengthens the main colour. Even a fleck of the charge colour strengthens the main colour without draining it. For red, the charge colour is green; for blue, it is orange; for yellow, it is purple and for black, it is white.
Avoid using draining yin colours; very yin or drab colours into which a lot of brown or black has been introduced as it is depressing from the Feng Shui perspective. Brown colour in rich tones has a big comeback in the recent years. But according to Feng Shui principles, use it in moderation as despite its nourishing Feng Shui energy overusing this colour may lead to its inhabitants lacking the ambition and drive to go forward in life. So keep it well-balanced with other colours.
Although blue has a calming effect, but avoid using too much blue in the bedrooms and boardrooms. If you must use blue, make it a ‘live blue’ and not a heavy, yin Prussian blue. Similarly, warm, silvery grey colour can bring a
Fire is the Feng Shui element of South in Ba gua area (also known as ‘Li’). You can use some of this element in the Northeast and South-west areas of your space.
beautiful clear and centering Feng Shui energy to your living room, main entry, home office or business area. Avoid the use of colour in big proportions in any of your bedrooms, either your own, your children’s or in the older parent’s bedroom.
If you experience challenges with opening your heart to a nurturing love relationship, start establishing a relationship with the colour pink and open yourself to being healed by it. Pink colour spreads soothing loving Feng Shui vibrations and it is there to help you heal your heart. Have pink or heart shaped rose quartz crystals in your bedroom in the South-west (love and marriage area) of your space; carry some in your purse or display them in the centre of your home.
IMPORTANT
Thus colours are important to create a
harmonious Feng Shui space at home
or in the office or in the business area.
They strengthen ‘Chi’ (life force) quite
effectively. They strengthen your destiny,
inspire you, increase your efficiency at
work and make you vibrant by filling
you with a lively and pulsating energy.
Avoid strong grey colour’s presence in
the East and South-east of your space
as both of these areas have wood as the
main Feng Shui element and grey colour,
being neutral destroys the wood.
The taste of succulent fruits, the soothing sounds of running water and serene wind chimes swaying with the summer breeze; the awe inspiring beauty of vividly coloured blooming flowers;the feel of walking barefoot on smooth pebbled pathways and on soft velvety grass.
Whether you are looking at working in a garden of 5 acress. I acre or a small patio of plat pots in your balcony, the same principles of Feng Shui apply.
This summer, transform your garden into an oasis of well being with these principles.
Clear all clutter in your garden. For instance, remove all heaps of dead leaves in corners, weeds or rusted metal.
keep your lawn trimmed. Replace broken pots.
Avoid stagnant 'chi' for example, blocked drains, stagnant water and unnecessarily disproportionate objects in the gardens. Also no leaking taps in the garden.
Direct positive life energy 'chi' through all areas of your garden by creating friendly spaces, flowing paths, romantic niches, statues and seats.
Wind (Feng & water Shui) should never be missing, Chimes from which the wind draws beautiful notes, help to animate your garden. Also water features in the right direction help create harmony.
keep a balance of shapes in your garden. Avoid irregular shapes. Always include a circle in some form in your garden.
Grow some red flowers in your front garden, as it provides vibrancy.
Avoid growing roses at the entrance of the front doors as it is considered bad Feng Shui and could damage the home owners [ because of the thorns emitting 'Sha Chi'].
